Explain It To Me Like I'm Fifty
If you can't explain it to a five-year-old, you don't know it. Or in this case if you can't explain it to a fifty-year-old...
I made the mistake of trying to teach my mom how to navigate my computer using the terminal. Keyword: tried. I figured she could learn more about the information on her hard drive and I could find some holes in my understanding.
She didn't. I did.
What started as optimism ended in, "I'll just watch you do it." I didn't know whether or not to admire her compassion towards my things or to be offended by her lack of confidence in my teaching ability.
Perhaps the latter was more fitting in hindsight.
I started, "pwd is used for..."
"What does pwd stand for?"
"I don't know, mom. All I know is the terminal... I should really know that"
Anyway, I got through the rest of the lesson and her glazed over expression told me everything I needed to know - I need to find a better way to explain this stuff.
P. S. pwd stands for print work directory.
